TORRINGTON — Linh Duong sought a business opportunity after graduating from Southern Connecticut State University, and, along with his wife, recently opened a nail salon in the city.
That choice has proven fruitful. Duong and his wife, Ha Tran, owners of the new Gloss Spa on Winsted Road, leaving the neighboring Pretty Nails salon to expand and meet customer demand.
They opened the Pretty Nails salon about eight years ago. Tran was already in the line of work, and Duong had helped his mother, who switched back and forth between the profession and accounting over the years, while in school.
“I went to school for business management, so I always wanted to be my own boss,” said Duong. “It was a good business opportunity at the time — something I could afford — and we did pretty well.”
Duong believes that the new salon provides excellent service and a fresh, diverting experience for Torrington residents.
“We just want to just be different — have the best spa experience when you come to Torrington,” said Duong. “When you come here, you just want to experience — you don’t want to think about the outside world, just enjoy and relax.”
This extends to the look of the place, he said. He and his wife designed it themselves — it was bright and open Friday afternoon, with music playing and folks chatting.
“When we built this ourselves, we thought about every single detail,” said Duong.
Duong said they had opened their own business, in part, because of that level of exacting attention.
“I don’t know if anyone is as meticulous as me and my wife — so that’s why we’ve decided to go on our own. If you work for someone else, and they’re not as meticulous and as clean as you are, you don’t feel good about doing services for other people,” said Duong.
He said that word about their efforts built and spread over the years, and the reaction to the new location has been positive.
He hopes local residents take pleasure in the place.
“We put all our heart and effort into the salon. We just didn’t do it halfway. We really put our heart and soul into it,” said Duong. “And we hope the residents of Torrington and the region enjoy it.”

The Gloss Spa offers manicures, pedicures, massages, waxing, and permanent makeup, among other services, Duong said.
